Happy Halloween!

In the spirit of celebration, I’ve got an old-timey recipe for you in this email that is a great upgrade to your mid-afternoon coffee or tea (and especially any sodas you might be drinking).

It’s a classic recipe that dates back to the 1700’s – but it’s making a comeback.

It’s called a switchel, a tangy-sweet drink made with apple cider vinegar, ginger, water, and a natural sweetener like maple syrup or molasses.

Not that we advocate using it for this, but word on the street is that this also makes a delicious mixer for adult beverages. :)

Apple cider vinegar has gotten a lot of press over the past 5-10 years for being amazingly good for you… and it is!

ACV has been shown to help lower blood sugar levels and it can help you lose weight by promoting a more “full” feeling.

It’s also perfect for salad dressings, because research shows it kills off bacteria like salmonella (which is also why vinegar is such a great DIY cleaning solution!).

Gut-friendly note: even when using ACV, you should never skimp on washing your produce and properly handling food!

Here’s another note: you can use either filtered or unfiltered apple cider vinegar in this recipe.

Raw unfiltered vinegar still contains the “mother,” which is the weird-looking stuff floating around the bottom of the bottle. The mother, which contains probiotics, grows as a result of the fermentation process. The most well-known brand of raw apple cider vinegar is Braggs (and it’s also the kind I use).

If you don’t like the idea of using unfiltered vinegar, you can absolutely use the filtered kind. It still has some great benefits.

OK. On with the recipe!

Switchel is best mixed several hours before you plan to drink it. Molasses is the most traditional sweetener, but I like mine with maple syrup. Feel free to experiment!

Maple-Ginger Switchel

Makes 1 serving

1 cup water

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

2 tsp maple syrup

Ginger (¼ tsp if using ground, or about 1-2 tsp if freshly grated)

Put all the ingredients in a mason jar, shake it up, and wait for at least 4 hours so flavors infuse. Pour it over ice and enjoy!

You can also include other flavors, like fresh mint, raspberries, or use sparkling water.
